We departed Isle of Hope Georgia at 8:15 AM bound for Beaufort South Carolina. This is a 47 mile trip which took us 7 hours. Normally, we try to avoid travelling more than 40 miles a day because that allows us to arrive at our destination early to see the sights. In this case. a longer trip was unavoidable.
As we approached Beaufort, we passed Perris island, the site where the U. S. Marine Corp conducts basic training. Emblazed on their large water tower is the motto "We Make Marines". This reminded me of my Air Force basic training in 1968 at Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas. Air Force basic training is nothing like Marine basic training, but I was sure glad when my Air Force basic training ended and we progressed to Air Force technical school. I was fortunate to be trained as a computer programmer. That, and my subsequent Computer Science degree from the University of California, Irvine, equipped me for my career as a programmer. The Air Force served me well.
We arrived at Lady's Island Marina at 3:30 PM. The marina is located across the bridge from downtown Beaufort. We made the 1.5 mile walk to downtown Beaufort and had wood fired pizza for dinner. As we finished dinner, a brief thunderstorm dumped heavy rain on downtown Beaufort. We took refuge at the nearby ice cream store until the thunderstorm passed. The ice cream was delicious.
When the thunderstorm passed, we took a brief walking tour of the homes in Beaufort's downtown. The town has many beautiful old homes that predate the Civil War. They were spared destruction when the town's citizens fled before the advancing Union Army.
We encountered young people celebrating Prom Night. They were dressed in their best apparel.
We walked back to the marina to prepare for tomorrow's long trip to Charleston. I did the engine checks that we normally do in the morning to allow us to depart at first light. We went to bed at 9:00 PM, which is early, so we could arise early the next morning.
